Statue vandals were 'inspired by demons' says priest

16 October 2008

A Dominican priest in Kilkenny has said thugs who defaced a statue of the Sacred Heart at the entrance to his church were “inspired by demons”.

Fr Dominic Browne said he prayed for the perpetrators of the crime, saying that the damage to the statue was “as stupid as it is wicked”.

“The statue is made of iron and is extremely heavy, so it must have taken several people to knock it off its pedestal,” he added.

Fr Browne said it would be marvellous if the perpetrators came forward and confessed, but added: “I think for that to happen would be hoping for a miracle.

“They don’t realise that as well as committing criminal damage, they are committing sacrilege”.

“These people need to be prayed for,” he added. “They need prayer to purify them and we have to ask why they have such viciousness in their lives.
